History of Gangolli church

GLIMPSE INTO   THE   HISTORY   OF   GANGULI   CHURCH Pratapananda Naik, S.J. Founder of Ganguli Church – Franciscan Friars Venkatappa Nayaka I (1582 – 1629 A.D.), the powerful king of Keladi to whom Ganguli belonged, died on 10 th November 1629. 1 His successor, Virabhadra Nayaka (1629 – 1645), was attacked by the Adil Shah of Bijapur and the other neighbouring kings. Besides the feudatories of Keladi began to revolt and a relative of Virabhadra claimed the throne of Keladi. 2 The Portuguese fully exploited this critical situation. Early in 1630 they took possession of Ganguli. 3 The Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Miguel de Noronha decided to execute the plan to build a fort at Ganguli. 4 The local Chettis (merchant caste) approved the plan under the condition that the Portuguese would defend them against Virabhadra Nayaka. The Portuguese had already acquired Kundapur fort in 1569 from Tolar chiefs. 5 About a century later, due to storm, the entranc...

The Jesuits completing 480 years by Pratapananda Naik, S.J.

The Jesuits from 27.09.1540 to 27.09.2020 are completing 480 years Pratapananda Naik, S.J.  26.09.2020 We are the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers founded by the soldier-turned-mystic Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) from Basque region of Spain,   with six of his early companions, namely, Francis Xavier, Peter Faber, Alfonso Salmeron, Diego Lainez, Nicolas Bobadilla, and Simão Rodrigues in 1539 and officially approved on 27 th September 1540 by Pope Paul III. But most people call us “the Jesuits.” In the vision of our founder, we seek to “find God in all things.” We dedicate ourselves to the “greater glory of God” and the good of all humanity. And we do so gratefully in collaboration with others who share our values, including laypersons. They have become part of the “we,” the extended Jesuit family. With 16,000-plus priests, brothers, scholastics, and novices worldwide, we are the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church...

Fr. Thomas Stephens, S.J. A Visionary by Pratapananda Naik, S.J.

FR. THOMAS STEPHENS, S.J. A VISIONARY (1549-1619) Pratapananda Naik, S.J.   Fr. Thomas Stephens, the first English Jesuit reached Goa by ship on 24 th October 1579. He lived, worked in Goa for 39 years, and one year at Vasai, Maharashtra and died in Goa. He is popularly known as Padre Estevão. Before his arrival, he knew English, Latin, Portuguese and probably Greek too. In Goa he learned and mastered Konknni and Marathi. He had the working knowledge of Sanskrit. He held many administrative positions in the Society of Jesus, of which he was a member. From his contribution to Konknni and Marathi, we could deduce that he was an original thinker, great creative poet and visionary. He could possibly be called the “Father of inculturation” in India. Fr. Gaspar de Sam Miguel a Franciscan priest who was a contemporary of Fr. Stephens and worked for Konknni in Goa, composed a pom in honour of Stephens, where he calls him “The poet par excellence”. His contribution to K...
